WHAT IS THE MASSACHUSETTS STATE SEAL OF BILITERACY?

The MA Seal of Biliteracy is an award that recognizes high school graduates who attain high functional and academic levels of proficiency in English and a world language in recognition of having studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.
In order to earn the Massachusetts Seal of Biliteracy, students must be graduating in June 2025, demonstrate proficiency in English and a partner language and earn proficiency on the English Language Arts portion of the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment (MCAS) Exam. An assessment in the partner language is required to demonstrate the student’s proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking.
The State Seal of Biliteracy takes the form of a seal that appears on the student’s transcript and diploma and is a statement of accomplishment for future employers and for college admissions. The colleges in Massachusetts that provide credits for prior learning and/or advanced course placement for students who have earned the Seal of Biliteracy are:
- Bridgewater State University
